“Dixies has been going for about 45 years and let’s hope another, at least 45.”
Dixies is situated in Glencairn / Simons Town on the east coast about 35kms / 22miles from Cape Town itself.
It is on the Indian Ocean rather than the Atlantic Ocean and so the water is usually a few degrees warmer than in Cape Town.
It is across the road from the beach and you have a wonderful view of the ocean and land expanse.
For those of us living in Cape Town itself it is a fairly long drive but only because the traffic on weekends is hectic, so if you have booked, it is recommended that you give enough time to get there.
There are a number of sea side towns along the route from Muizenberg, Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay, Marina da Gama, St James, and others, that have been there for eons and each have their own unique ‘feeling’.
There are a myriad restaurants in the area and shopping ‘experiences’.
Dixies has great prawns, grilled calamari steaks, line fish, and of course steaks, hamburgers and your usual restaurant food.
I specifically go there for the seafood and their prawns are as good as, if not better and about 35% cheaper, than your Fine Dining restaurants.
The main problem with Dixies, is that it is so easy to simply relax, eat their food and spend hours eating and drinking a bit too much, which does lead to one having to negotiate the stairs very carefully when somewhat inebriated, and that has happened to me on a few occasions. However the occasional almost-fall is well worth it.
Oh and lest I forget, it is not far from Boulders which has a plethora of penguins on the beach.
